Johnny Mize
Full Player Profile →
Mize is one of the cleanest “rate-stat monsters” at first base, and he deserves more mainstream respect. His ability to combine power and on-base skill shows up clearly in his OPS+ dominance. He led leagues in homers and on-base metrics, proving he wasn’t just a one-category player. Military service cost him prime time, and that matters because it suppresses the headline totals people lean on. When you focus on actual offensive quality, he’s right there with the best of his era. He also avoided the extreme strikeout profile of many sluggers, keeping his value stable against different pitching styles. His best seasons are devastatingly efficient: lots of walks, lots of damage, very few wasted plate appearances. In a lineup, he’s a pure run-creation machine who doesn’t need ideal conditions to thrive. Put the missed seasons back, and you’re talking about a player with top-five-level statistical shape.
